How to Wear the Blood Pressure Cuff
Note: make sure to use the appropriate cuff size before applying.
- Remove any clothing or jewelry that could interfere with the placement of the cuff.
- Sit on a table or desk with your feet flat on the floor.
- Extend your left arm and find your brachial artery (located at the inner aspect of your elbow). You should be able to feel your pulse. Proper application means the cuff’s artery patch is pointed to your brachial artery.
- Open the cuff to create a circle that you can slide your arm into but do not extend beyond the metal bar.
- Insert your left arm into the cuff. Position the cuff’s bottom edge approximately ½ inch above your elbow. When taking a reading, the stethoscope chestpiece should directly touch the inside of your arm over your brachial artery.
- With your arm extended, palm facing upward, and the tubes positioned down the center of your arm, pull the cuff’s end and secure the hook and loop material using your right hand. Ensure that the artery mark is still pointed to your brachial artery.
- Make sure the cuff snugly fits around your arm in that you can insert one finger easily between the cuff and your arm.
How to Take Your Blood Pressure Reading
Patient – Applying the Cuff and Positioning the Arm
- Make sure to carefully follow the instructions on How to Wear the Blood Pressure Cuff.
- Position your elbow on a table with your arm and palm facing upward.
- Elevate your hand so your wrist will be on the same level as your heart. Relax your hands.
Caregiver – Preparations in Taking the Measurement
- Sit in the front and at the same level as your patient.
- Place the ear tips of the stethoscope in your ears and position the chestpiece on the inside of your patient’s arm. Chestpiece must be partially under the cuff and over the patient’s brachial artery.
- Hold the gauge in your hand or position it in an area where it can be read without being moved (e.g. thick notebook or folded towel).
- On your free hand, hold the inflation bulb and turn the air release valve in a clockwise direction to close.
- Start inflating the cuff slowly and consistently by pumping the inflation bulb until the gauge reads s 30 mmHG ABOVE the previous SYSTOLIC measurement. If you are not aware of the previous SYSTOLIC measurement, inflate the cuff between 180-200 mmHg. DO NOT inflate over 280 mmHg.
- As you reach the proper inflation level, slowly and steadily turn the air release valve counterclockwise at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per second.
- As pressure drops, listen closely for the pulse beat while watching the gauge at the same time. the first thumping sound you will hear is the SYSTOLIC pressure.
- Let the cuff continue to deflate. You will hear changes in the sound until there is no sound at all. As soon as you hear the last sound, not the reading measurement which is the DIASTOLIC pressure.
- Immediately turn the valve in a counterclockwise direction to deflate the remaining air. Remove the cuff and record the measurement on the chart included in the package.
Care Instructions
- Do not any liquid get in contact with the gauge and cuff.
- Do not store in direct sunlight, excessive humidity, or dust.
- Do not place or use in areas with extreme temperatures.
- Avoid dropping or hitting the gauge or stethoscope chestpiece on hard surfaces.

Other factors, including the time of day, can influence blood pressure reading results.
It is important to wait for a minimum of 15 minutes between readings. The
wait time may vary depending on individual physiological characteristics.

Your blood pressure unit and accompanying detailed instruction guidebook are designed for left-arm use. If you are unable to or do not want to use your left arm, modify the instructions for right arm/wrist use. The same arm should be used for all readings to ensure reliable comparisons.
The prescribed range for your blood pressure monitor is included on the specifications page of your instruction guidebook. Reading accuracy can be affected if an improperly sized cuff is used. Most models offer additional cuff sizes available for purchase. Please check the instruction manual with your blood pressure monitor for further details.
